The Allure, like its sister-ship, The Oasis of the Seas, accommodates more than 5,400 passengers and has 18 decks. The Allure is reportedly two inches longer than its sister, which technically makes it the largest cruise ship in the world! Like the Oasis, the Allure is designed around 7 themed neighborhoods. The neighborhoods are, Central Park, Boardwalk, Royal Promenade, Sports Zone, Spa & Fitness, Entertainment and Youth Zone. The design of the Allure/Oasis is truly revolutionary. Cruise passengers can enjoy a long list of “firsts”. For example, the first park at sea – filled with lush vegetation, flowers and trees, the first ever zip-line at sea and the first ever carousel at sea. The “first” feature that impressed me most however was the Aqua Theatre; the first ever amphitheater at sea which features spellbinding aquatic acrobatic shows with dives from platforms that tower 39-feet in the air. There are no words to describe the artistry and beauty of the performances and the best part is that you don’t have to pay for the shows.

With 37 different stateroom options, everyone is sure to find just the right one; ranging from basic inside rooms to opulent two-story royal loft suites. The lofts offer amazing views of the ocean with floor-to-ceiling double-height windows to ensure that views can be enjoyed from every vantage point. The royal loft suite has 1, 524 sq ft and features its own baby grand piano, indoor and outdoor dining areas, private wet bar, an 843 sq ft balcony, and an entertainment area and jacuzzi. Be aware however that even though this suite has enormous space, it can only accommodate up to six guests. The royal loft suite does however have the ability to connect to another suite ( crown loft suite) for additional room to accommodate a total of ten guests, providing 2, 069 sq ft. All staterooms have iPod docking stations with clocks and triple electrical outlets on desk tops. The Allure offers 24 dining options, many of which are the same as the Oasis – Giovanni’s Table, 150 Central Park, Johnny Rockets, Park Cafe, Chops Grille, Solarium Bistro, Wipe Out Cafe, Izumi Asian Restaurant, Sorrento’s Pizzeria, Cafe Promenade, the Cupcake Cupboard, Vitality Cafe, and Windjammer Marketplace. They have also added several new choices; Samba Grill, a Brazilian churrascaria and Rita’s Cantina, a Mexican restaurant. The Allure also has the distinction of having the first Starbucks at sea.

Royal Caribbean has partnered with DreamWorks to provide characters on the Allure. The characters from Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar and How to Train Your Dragon can be found throughout the ship, providing children of all ages with perfect photo opportunities. The Allure of the Seas must be “experienced” to be believed. It’s the perfect choice for multi-generational Family Cruises because there’s something to please every age group. Cruise rates on the Allure are still a bit higher than the average Caribbean cruise but that’s to be expected. With careful planning and a flexible schedule however, good rates can still be found. For example, inside room rates can start as low as $875pp plus tax on some sailings.

The Coconut Bay Beach Resort is an all-inclusive casual Caribbean resort less than a mile from the Hewanorra International Airport and is one of my top recommendations for family reunion gatherings. This resort is situated along the southern coast of St. Lucia and offers the best of both worlds. How often do you find a resort that can please an entire family? Unfortunately, not very often. Coconut Bay has succeeded in this effort by literally providing 2 separate resort experiences at the same resort. They’ve created a unique design that divides the 254 room property in half. One side is designated for families with children and is called the Splash Wing. The other side of the property is adults-only and is called Harmony. This innovative concept works very well and allows everyone to create their own individual unique vacation memories. The family side of the resort features an array of “child-centered” activities that are perfect for all age groups. There’s a supervised Kids Klub for children up to 12 years of age, a paint ball facility, tennis courts, performance stages, basketball courts and Cocoland Water Park. The amazing Cocoland Water Park has the distinction of being the largest water park in St. Lucia and features a lazy river, family activity pool and an assortment of water slides. On the adults-only side, it’s impossible to feel or be stressed in the midst of such tranquil settings as intimate cabana beds, a quiet pool bar, chaise lounges, hammocks and the Kai Mer Spa. The resort rooms offer either lush gardenviews or atlantic oceanviews. The furnishings are laid back and comfortable and all around the resort, you’ll find areas to curl up with a book, meditate, or take a nap. Coconut Bay offers a choice of 4 dining options; the Coconut Walk which is the main resort restaurant, the all day Grill and 2 specialty restaurants; Silk (Asian Cuisine) and Bellagio (Italian Cuisine).

The Coconut Bay Resort is a great choice for a caribbean getaway. It’s designed to please all age groups and is a wonderful option for couples, families or singles. It is especially a good fit for Family Reunion gatherings. The resort staff is welcoming, personable, very helpful and always available when needed. Rates vary depending on vacation dates but are sometimes as low as $298 per night. Why not treat your family to the “best of both worlds” on your next vacation!
